Abnormal Vaginal Discharge and Itching: What Your Body Is Telling You
If you're a woman of childbearing age, some vaginal discharge is completely normal. Glands in the cervix and the walls of the vagina constantly produce a clear fluid. Once it meets the air, that fluid can turn white or pale yellow — and that's normal too.
But when discharge changes colour, starts to smell, or comes with itching that won't let you rest, your body is telling you something is wrong.
Normal Discharge and Your Monthly Cycle
The amount of discharge you produce rises and falls with your monthly cycle, because it follows the changing levels of your reproductive hormones. Your cycle also shapes its other qualities, such as how thick or sticky it is.
It's normal to notice more discharge:
- around ovulation, when an egg is released from the ovary,
- during pregnancy, and
- when you are sexually aroused.
Signs Your Discharge Is Not Normal
Sometimes discharge comes with signs that aren't normal:
- An unusual colour — brown, grey, green, cloudy or blood-stained,
- A bad smell, and
- Itching.
These signs usually point to an infection or an allergy, and less often to cancer in the reproductive system.
Infections and Cancer of the Reproductive System
Various infections of the reproductive system, as well as cancer, can cause abnormal vaginal discharge. The infections include:
- Chlamydia, gonorrhoea (*Neisseria gonorrhoeae*) and trichomoniasis (*Trichomonas vaginalis*) — all of which are sexually transmitted;
- Yeast (fungal) infections, mainly caused by *Candida albicans*; and
- An overgrowth of the bacteria that normally live in the vagina. When they multiply out of control, they produce a greyish discharge with a fishy smell — the classic sign of bacterial vaginosis.
Hormonal Causes and Allergies
- After menopause, a woman's oestrogen levels drop very low and her body produces far less vaginal moisture. The resulting dryness can cause itching.
- Some sanitary pads and underwear trigger allergic reactions in some women. These can show up as itching, heavy discharge, or discharge with an odour and colour.
- Some bathroom products — soaps, shaving foam, cosmetics, creams and vaginal washes or medications — contain chemicals that irritate some women, with the same symptoms: itching, heavy discharge, odour and colour.
Everyday Self-Care
Keep the vaginal area clean and well dried — and if you have a problem, seek professional help.
- Wash with lukewarm water only, and don't use soap of any kind.
- Don't rub yourself dry. Pat gently with a towel until the area is dry.
- Stop using perfumes and cosmetics around the vagina.
- If you have diabetes, it's very important to keep your blood sugar within the recommended range as much of the time as possible.
- Let the area breathe. Wear loose-fitting, cotton underwear — or none at all.
- Wipe from front to back after using the toilet, never the other way round. Washing with water is better than using toilet paper.
Beating Stubborn, Chronic Infections
